Meet the Chausie: A Domesticated Jungle Cat

For those drawn to the striking aesthetic of a wild cat, the Chausie offers a unique
compromise: the appearance of an exotic jungle predator combined with the
temperament of a domestic companion. Pronounced “chow-see,” this large, muscular breed possesses a regal, commanding presence reminiscent of the wild cats depicted in ancient Egyptian art.

Developed in the 1990s through the intentional crossing of the wild Jungle Cat and the domestic Abyssinian, the Chausie was carefully bred to preserve the distinctive physical traits of its wild ancestry while cultivating a predictable, people-oriented domestic personality. The breed gained formal recognition from the international cat fancy in 2013, when The International Cat Association (TICA) officially granted the Chausie full Championship status.
Big Size, Bigger Personality
These aren't your average lazy house cats. They are massive, muscular sidekicks with a surprisingly affectionate, human-obsessed streak that makes them stand out among exotic cat breeds.
Chausie Cat Size: Large-breed males weigh 15 to 25 pounds; females run 10 to
15 pounds.
Wild Appearance: Tall, athletic build, striking almond eyes, and large, tufted
ears.
Dog-Like Personality: They crave attention, shadow you from room to room,
and greeting you at the door is their favorite hobby. Unlike aloof breeds, they will vocalize loudly to tell you all about their day. They simply refuse to be left out of any family activities!
High-Flying Energy & Active Cat Care
Keeping up with a Chausie’s high energy level is a thrilling, full-time sport. They
possess a brilliant, problem-solving mind, meaning they need plenty of mental
stimulation. If left bored, these intelligent cats will easily figure out how to unlatch your kitchen cabinets or open closed doors to make their own fun!
Olympic Jumpers: Their powerful hind legs can launch them eight feet straight
up from a dead stop. Invest in sturdy, ceiling-high cat trees or wall shelves, or
they will claim the top of your refrigerator.
Water Lovers: Descended from Nile Valley fish hunters, they love splashing in
faucets, playing in water bowls, or even crashing your morning shower.
Smart & Hungry: They need advanced puzzle toys and harness walks to drain their energy, plus a premium high-protein, grain-free cat diet to fuel their
lightning-fast metabolism and protect their sensitive stomachs.
The Verdict: Is This Hybrid Cat Right For You?
If you have the time for at least 30–45 minutes of daily play and plenty of vertical space for climbing, this unique breed rewards you with endless entertainment, hilarious antics, and unmatched loyalty! For cat lovers seeking the perfect balance of a wild look and a domestic heart, the Chausie is an absolute dream companion.
