Cat-Safe Plants

Bringing a bit of green into your home is great for you, but not always great for your cat. Many common houseplants and flowers can be toxic to curious kitties. Luckily, there are plenty of safe and beautiful alternatives that let you keep your space vibrant and pet-friendly.

Not all houseplants are off-limits for cat households, in fact, some are totally safe and even thrive in the same cozy spaces our cats do. Whether you're after something lush and tropical or compact and easy-care, these non-toxic picks add natural beauty to your home without posing a risk to your curious feline:

  • Spider Plant – Hardy, air-purifying, and loved by cats

  • Areca Palm – Lush, tropical vibes without the toxicity

  • Calathea (Prayer Plant) – Striking patterns and non-toxic to cats

  • Bamboo Palm – Tall, elegant, and great for low-light spaces

  • Peperomia – Compact and easy-care

While many cut flowers (like lilies and tulips) are a no-go for cats, these beauties are both safe and stunning:

  • Roses (no pesticides)

  • Sunflowers

  • Snapdragons

  • Gerbera Daisies

Even with cat-safe plants, it’s still a good idea to keep a few precautions in mind. Try placing your plants on high shelves, window ledges, or in hanging planters to keep them out of reach, especially if your cat’s the curious type. Skip any chemical fertilizers or pest sprays, as these can still be harmful even if the plant itself is safe. It’s also worth remembering that while some plants are non-toxic, eating large amounts of any greenery can upset your cat’s stomach. With just a bit of planning, you can enjoy a lush, cat-safe home full of personality and plants!
