The Truth About Catnip

Catnip might seem like magic, but there’s real science behind your cat’s wild reaction. For most cats, it’s a harmless and fun way to add a little extra enrichment to their day.

What is Catnip

Nepeta cataria— more commonly known as Catnip—is an herb that comes from the mint family. It’s native to parts of Asia, Europe, and parts of Africa; but it has made its way across the world throughout the years.

Catnip wasn’t used just for pets. Historically, its leaves were brewed into teas and used in herbal remedies to treat everything from coughs and stomachaches to insomnia and anxiety.

How Does Catnip Work?

So, what exactly makes cats act a little extra goofy around catnip? The answer lies in an essential oil called nepetalactone, found in the leaves and stems of the plant. When a cat sniffs this compound, it stimulates their vomeronasal gland — a scent-detecting organ located on the roof of the mouth that connects directly to the brain.

This oil mimics feline sex hormones, which is why many cats respond with behaviors like rubbing, rolling, purring, zooming, or affectionate playfulness. Interestingly, both male and female cats can experience these effects, even if they’ve been spayed or neutered.

Both female and male cats can respond to catnip, regardless if they’ve been spayed or neutered. However, how severely cats are affected by catnip is hereditary. Studies show that around 30-40% of cats don’t respond to catnip at all.

How To Use Catnip

Catnip can be a fun mood booster and even help to reduce anxiety or alleviate pain. But, like everything, it should be used in moderation.

In terms of how much catnip you should give your feline, a little goes a long way. If used often enough, cats can lose sensitivity to the effects. Because of this, veterinarians say to use catnip every few days. Keep in mind that every cat is different, so observe how yours responds and adjust accordingly. And, as always, consult your veterinarian if you’re unsure about how often or how much catnip your pet should have.

Catnip is a safe, natural way to add enrichment to their day — as long as it’s used in moderation. From playful zoomies to calming effects, it all depends on your cat’s unique personality. Try out a few forms, observe their response, and have fun discovering what your cat enjoys.
